چکیده

In terms of the fully relativistic screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method we investigate the variation in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) of hexagonal close-packed cobalt with the addition of platinum impurities. In particular, we perform calculations on a bulk cobalt system in which one of the atomic layers contains a fractional, substitutional platinum impurity. Our calculations show that at small concentrations of platinum the MAE is reduced, while at larger concentrations the MAE is enhanced. This change of the MAE can be attributed to an interplay between on-site Pt MAE contributions and induced MAE contributions on the Co sites. The latter ones are subject to pronounced, long-ranged Friedel-oscillations that can lead to significant size effects in the experimental determination of the MAE of nano-sized samples. ar X iv :1 20 6. 62 00 v1 [ co nd -m at .m tr lsc i] 2 7 Ju n 20 12 Effect of Pt impurities on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of hcp Co: a first-principles study2

Magnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy of 3dtransition metal monolayers on Pt(001): a density-functional study.

We systematically investigate the effects of having Pt as a substrate and/or capping layer on the magnetism and magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) of 3d transition metal (TMs; Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) monolayers (MLs) by using a first-principles calculationl method. We found that Fe and Co MLs are ferromagnetic (FM) on a Pt(001) surface, but Mn and Cr MLs are antiferromagnetic (AFM). The magnetic m...

Anisotropy of Doped Transition-Metal Magnets

Calculations of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy are used to evaluate prospects for new lanthanide-free permanent magnets. Based on the requirement of transition-metal-rich phases, we investigate interstitial impurities in tetragonally distorted bcc Fe and sub stitutional impurities in hcp Co, and compare doped bulk materials with nanostructures, especially with elemental 3d and YCo5 nanoparti...

Effects of substrate bias on magnetocrystalline anisotropy Ku of CoPt thin films with increasing Pt content

The magnetocrystalline anisotropy Ku of continuous Co1−xPtx alloy films peaks at 30 at. % of Pt. Further increase in Pt at. % decreases Ku quickly probably due to the increasing density of stacking faults SFs and the fcc phases. The effect of substrate bias has been studied in various compositions of CoPt films. Ku increases from 8 10 6 to 1.1 107 ergs /cm3 when 50 V bias was applied to Co60Pt4...

The Spin-Other-Orbit Interaction and Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy

We report the effect of the two-body, spin-other-orbit interaction on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy of the 3d transition metals. The relevant energy differences were computed for bcc Fe, fcc Ni, and hcp Co using a linearized augmented plane wave method to solve the scalar relativistic KohnSham equations in the local spin-density approximation. The spin-otherorbit interaction was inco...

Ferroelectric control of magnetocrystalline anisotropy at cobalt/poly(vinylidene fluoride) interfaces.

Electric field control of magnetization is one of the promising avenues for achieving high-density energy-efficient magnetic data storage. Ferroelectric materials can be especially useful for that purpose as a source of very large switchable electric fields when interfaced with a ferromagnet. Organic ferroelectrics, such as poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), have an additional advantage of being...
